Boron carbide, also known as Carbonado, is an inorganic substance, with the chemical formula of B ₄ C, usually a grayish black powder. It is one of the three hardest materials known (only second to diamond and cubic phase Boron nitride), and is used in tank armor, bullet proof clothing and many industrial applications. Its Mohs scale hardness is about 9.5.
Due to its low density, high strength, high temperature stability, and good chemical stability. Used in wear-resistant materials, ceramic reinforcement phases, especially in lightweight armor, reactor neutron absorbers, and other areas. In addition, compared with diamond and cubic Boron nitride, Boron carbide is easier to manufacture and cheaper, so it is more widely used. It can replace expensive diamond in some places, and is commonly used in grinding, crushing, drilling, and other applications.
